Frankly, I do not remember my first steps on the ice. The only thing that I do remember is my mother putting me on the skates on an outdoor skating rink near our house. Both my mother and my father skated, so they put me on the ice too. I remember myself all wrapped up in scarves and hat with no less than 30 pairs on wool socks on my feet. However, I'm certain that I've never resisted and always asked for more and more skating. Later they brought me to “Dynamo” skating club, I skated there for a year and I loved it. To celebrate my successes they bought me a dress, it was knitwear, a blue dress with Mickey Mouse. I remember it perfectly, the first thing I've earned for my labors. I don't really remember the rest, just some moments: learning crossovers, entering a spin... Such bright moments! If I failed to do something I kept working on it until I learned how to do it. I could have been moody, like "boo I could not do those shosses!" But I always kept trying until I got it. I still do. More

I put the skates on when I was four. No, even earlier, my father had once pulled me along to an outdoor ice rink, set for hockey players near our house. I remember crying, because my feet ached in the skates. I did not really skate back then, merely run across the ice. I soon got tired of it. But my mother and my grandmother still brought me to a small ice rink on Petrovka. I cannot recall any on-ice practices, only off-ice ones. We had to pass a test. Spiral, shoot-the-duck, there were chalk circles drawn on the floor and you had to stay within them during the exercise. I recall more from the music classes I had at the time, I sang in chorus. I loved singing, but I hated sitting for three hours straight on a hard chair drawing notes. By the time the school begun I had to choose: music or skating. I still don't understand why I said 'skating'. More

Yana: I guess the first time I noticed Serezha was at Russian Nationals. Naturally, you pay attention to the teams, which finish ahead of you. But I did not look too close; after all you usually concentrate on those, who finish in top three, and Serega and Natasha finished around sixth. So I knew there was Lepetukha-Novitsky team. The reason I noticed them, however, was Natalia. I knew her from my ballet days; we had started together, in one group. Soon she left for Yekaterinburg to learn ice dancing, though, and I stayed behind for another three years. We met again in Larisa Vladimirovna group. So Serezha is lucky with ballet girls.
Sergey: They started working on teaming me up with Yana very subtly. She skated with Vanya Manvelov at the time and they went to a competition, Russian Cup event, in Samara. Larisa Vladimirovna told me: “Why don't you come with us, you don't really have anything important to do here.” So I went. And they teamed us up. In the evening she skated with Vanya and in the daytime she was learning my steps and my dances. More |
